Barrell Foundation Straight Bourbons Review

Barrell Foundation Straight Bourbons Review

Until now, everything Barrell Craft Spirits has produced has been cask strength.  Foundation is Barrell’s first bottling not at cask strength.

Proof: 100°

MSRP: $54.99

The blend consists of 7 bourbons from 4 states:

Kentucky bourbon

Age: 8 year

Indiana bourbon

Age: 5, 6, 9 year

Tennessee bourbon

Age: 5, 6 year

Maryland bourbon

5, 6 year

Derived mash bill:

73% corn, 23% rye, 4% malted barley

Color 👁️: Caramel

Nose 👃: Caramel.  Baking spices. Orange zest. Unsweetened cocoa powder.  Peanuts.  The whole package smells a bit like a piece of turtle candy.

Palate 👅:  Tobacco. Vanilla. Dark chocolate. Toffee.  Oak. Baking spices. Thick and heavy mouthfeel.

Finish 🏁: Toffee. Tobacco. Dark stone fruits. Baking spices. Long in length. Dry.

Overall thoughts?  Barrell has made a name with cask strength, but their initial 100 proof offering is a success!  It’s a beautiful bourbon at an affordable price.  It doesn’t matter the proof… Barrell is still good at blending.
